hello.
This morning, I was lounging on an oversized chair in a sunlit corner of a busy cafe, reading a book to my son and sipping on an americano, when a woman I've never met walked briskly toward me, leaned over and said in a confidential tone, "I just wanted to say that I love your blog! I miss it!" I thanked her as she walked away, and just like that I was like, OH HEY. I kind of miss it too.
Here are some things I've been up to:
Baking apple tarts for friends. (Martha Stewart pie crust, apple slices, chunks of butter, pumpkin pie spice, brown sugar, and a pinch of kosher salt, then into the oven til done.)
Unsuccessfully ripening my meager haul of green tomatoes from the garden in a paper bag with a ripe apple. I guess they were technically "ripe" in the sense that they smelled really bad after turning brown in the bag, but it's not really what I was going for. (I can't be the only person who has made this dumb 'ripe' joke about their tomatoes, right?)
Snacking on breakfast radishes from a small patch in my only garden plot not currently fouled with cat shit.
Eating poached eggs on top of kale that has been sauteed in olive oil, then tossed with grain mustard and a splash of cider vinegar.
Staying up late in my office, drinking wine from coffee mugs and half-assedly working on art projects.
And to the lady who approached me in the cafe this morning, (and the other small handful of people who have actually come up to me in person to say they liked my blog) HELLO! I hope you're having a good day.

i tried THREE methods of ripening green tomatoes this year, and so far they've all failed!
glad to see your post!
i think yesterday was the first time in two years that i ate a perfectly ripe, juicy pear. for whatever reason fruit goes straight from hard and inedible to mushy and freakin gross in my kitchen. it's very sad.
and those eggs look delicious.
this post made me smile.
I too miss your posts.
Does the cat shit at least keep the bugs away?
I discovered your blog the other day and love the way you write, what you write about and your photos - it's all very relaxed and fun..one of my favorite food blogs so I'm glad you're still blogging! Oh, I made the no knead bread according to your blog and wow it was so good - even after a few days.
That pie looks incredible!!!!
Missed you, girlie. That tart looks amazing. I gave up trying to ripen all of my green tomatoes and just fried the suckers up.
Huzzah! I'm glad you're back.
YAY!!! you're back!!! I've been a reader since the days that you and summer did this together and I have always enjoyed your banter. I'm glad to see you've missed writing as much as we've missed reading.
I discover your blog not long ago, I got so addicted I had to read all your post to catch up :) I'm Italian, and I love to cook too so I started a blog too about what I cook, you were such an inspiration, thank you!!
I haven't tried ripening green tomatoes. If I can tell they aren't going to ripen up, I slice them and coat them with corn meal and fry them up! Fried Green Tomatoes are soooooo delish!
Thanks for the post! I love your food ideas and photos. They always inspire me to make something good to eat.
If we lived in the same area and I saw you, I would totally tell you that I liked your blog and missed your posts.
Have you never noticed my cat shit preventing contraptions? They are a pain in the ass themselves, but they work.
I love apple tarts...make them all the time, that one looks yummy....now as for the tomatoes, I'm a southern boy, so I fry my green ones right up...yummers;)
Oh, yes, I've missed your customary snark + food equation, myself.
Glad to see you back! Maybe it will kick me into gear to get back to my neglected blog.
I missing the days of sunshine at the park now!
please come back!
i totally like your blog and have missed it! Glad you're back. And I love fried green tomatoes, maybe their 'ripeness' or lack there of wouldn't matter for those?
Yay! I've missed your blog too lady!
I might try pickling my green tomatoes. However, I have no idea what that's going to taste like.
hi i like your blog too
:)
how fucking awesome was THAT! random lady buying you coffee and knowing who you are????!!!! nice!
as for ripening tomatoes...stick in a box on some newspaper - doesn't even need a lid but you could cover the top with newspaper if you want. check daily - ripe in no time. easy peasy.
now off to starbucks to sit on my big ass and wait for some free coffee! lucky lucky you!!
christie, this is how our whole summer went:
"man we need to get some of those wire things that ed & christie have to keep the cats out of this box."
"oh yeah, i'll try to remember to get some."
repeat, forever.
you know how it is!
I know it sounds totally weird, but I use my green tomatoes to make green tomato pie. It is absolutely delish! It tastes almost exactly like apple pie, but I think it's even more yummy! I mean, in the end, a green tomato is really just a tart fruit... I've also made GT chutney and GT mince meat. Great use for all those leftovers that never ripened.

beautifull pictures!!love it
Yay to the lady in the shop. I agree! :) Keep writing.
Alicia, it is really frickin good to see you back!
You write when you have time and when you want. that's the way to love a blog!
i just reread your post - not sure why...just found myself bored at the keyboard and realized i have no idea why i thought the lady bought you a coffee. if you were sitting there drinking a coffee - she would have brought over a shortbread or something - right???
looks like i'll be sitting at starbucks waiting for someone to buy me an espresso b/c obviously i need more caffeine
I look at other blogs, but I really only like yours. I try to like others, I really do! Some are pretty good, but for some reason, this is the only one I really want to read. Maybe because I grew up in Portland, or maybe because I used to be vegetarian (and vegan for a time) as well, I don't know. But what I do know is that you got it goin' on, and even if you don't update much I don't care! You amuse and interest me like none other...
ps. I have a bowl full of green tomatoes sitting on my counter right now... about half of them have ripened as of yet. We'll see what happens to the rest...
So glad to see you back! You are like my crack...I love reading your stuff:)
i can't wait to run into you some day and tell you how much i miss your blog.
jon, you win creepiest comment award. i'm not sure why, but for some reason i read your comment as "i can't wait to wear your face like a mask."
maybe it's your weird empty blog with a picture of a hot chick as a profile image.
Green Tomato Pie is amazing. It does taste like apple pie, in a weird way. I didn't know anyone else made it. haha. :)
Fried green tomatoes. Mock apple pie with green tomatoes instead of apples. It works!
Your photos are amazing! Love the blog.
I haven't been around much either, but it's nice to see you! Welcome back! I'm looking forward to your updates when I randomly swing on through.
Take care!!!
bread are magic food!it can be eaten any time of the day because it is availble any time of the day. one can make a real nice and deliciously good variation of it. with fruit jam or with butter. with salsa or just plain.with water or soda.with coffee or just plain!
Oh, I suspect there's a LOT of people missing you. I miss you. And just to see a brief post with some beautiful photos and a scattering of your words - just totally made my day! Thanks!
I love tomatoes and eggs in breakfast.. So yummy..!
