garden progress

pumpkin patch!

cucumber babies

burgundy bean

baby sugar pumpkin!

lettuce

lettuce

chamomile!

Here's a jumble of things that are growing in my life right now- cucumbers, sugar pumpkins, burgundy beans, lots of lettuce. Tomatoes aren't doing spectacular but I'll take what I can get.

On another note, I think I'm coming to the end of this blog, honestly. I've gotten a lot of comments and even some emails pointing out that my tone is getting less pleasant around here and that I don't seem as interested as I used to, and you know what? Y'all are right. I've already officially 86'd my drawing blog and to be honest, I was just using this as a high-traffic blog to get people to look at my art that I was trying to sell. I mean, I love photographing food and talking about food but I'm not really interested in being a Food Blogger- or maybe I am, I don't know. I do know that I have been addicted to the internets since I was like 11 years old so it's not like I'm going to up and disappear, I'm probably just going to start some new project and hope that some of my readers from this blog will come check it out.

For what it's worth, anyone who has complaints about my tone probably doesn't know me in real life at all. If you had any idea how much time I spend saying the word "fuck" you'd probably either not want to be my friend or you'd think I'm hilarious.

So anyway, I'll update whenever I get my shit together on something new. I'm just feeling totally uninspired right now, which might have something to do with working full time or it might just be a normal dip in the ol' creativity, whatever. IT'S BEEN A GOOD RUN, BREAD AND HONEY. Shit's about to get real, tho. :P

Damn, I really enjoyed reading this. I look forward to seeing what else you come up with. Food blogs can get a little to cutesie, your tone was appreciated by some :)

I don't comment much - I think this is exactly my second comment - but I like your blog, including the swearing. If you go somewhere else, I'll follow.

Don't do it! I just found your blog and I live in Portland too!

ah well, thanks for the time and effort you have put into this blog. I found your blog inspiring, to see the sense of community you have created by growing your own food and feeding people good, nourishing food. Nice photos, too.
Cheers.

Way to go and ruin my Monday, Alice. Just kidding, not trying to be a whiny brat or anything but I actually like your tone and will miss your garden pics and hippie pizza crust recipes and blah blah blah. Whatever you end up doing outside of this blog, I hope you get your creative mojo back.

Good luck with future endeavors- but I'll keep your blog on my reader just in case! I enjoy your tone, as most mom food blogs tend to be too sugary sweet. I like reading and being able to hear your voice.

Please let us know if you start up any new projects. Your posts brighten my day!

Geez, it's not like there isn't a million food blogs out there, you'd think that anyone having a problem with your language or "tone" could just find another blog to read.

I'll be sad to see you go but I totally get it, if you're not feeling it, what's the point. Good luck with your future endeavors!

oh no! don't let those comments get you down! i found your blog early this year (or so) and think you are downright fucking hysterical!!! i've even read your posts to my sil who gets it as well. i spend my days reading happy sappy blogs - and even have one myself - but honestly i have the mouth of a trucker so whatever. if you go elsewhere - be sure to let us fans know where.

Calantha said...

Your tone is what made me started reading your blog in the first place - it was so different from all the other food blogs out there and I always got such a laugh out of it! I hope you do do something different that I can read if you do decide to nix this blog!

i love your writing and photos and comical bitchiness and am sorry to see you go! i'll be keeping an eye out for your next big thing!

Nooooooo!!! You have the most original voice and I adore reading your blogs b/c I can actually "hear" you. It's like you're sitting next to me and we're drinking coffee and chatting. Your tone is real. It's unique. It's refreshing. For those who don't like it, well, they can read something else. So, I'm entering a late entry plea to continue (at whatever pace suits you -- but don't quit all together!).

Julie said...

awe I am so sad....I love your blog precisely because of your tone. So refreshing :)

I don't want to sound like I'm talking you off a bridge or anything - it's a blog, I get it, there are more important things - but your attitude is the reason I read this blog, and honestly one of the only food blogs I follow without skimming for recipes. I agree with other commenters; you don't have that saccharine sweetness that too many mom bloggers adopt, and I admired the way you gave that snide commenter the boot a few posts back. In short, I'll miss your recipes, I'll miss your gumption, and I might do a little dance if you reconsider!

Glad I got the chance to meet you and the boy in person today before you go off the air.
It's been fun and it's been real, but if it isn't real fun anymore, I get it.
Tell your friend of Get Better to take over. My list of awesome Portland bloggers is dwindling (and I'm obviously too lazy to make my blog awesome).
See ya 'round the parks.

I've been reading this blog for about 2 years, and despite all the other "popular" blogs I follow, this is truly my favorite. You will be missed, and I certainly love your honest approach to food. I make chicken stock because of you.

Jana said...

I am so disappointed...I will miss your blog. I have LOVED it! When I found it..I read all the way back to the beginning and check every night for a new post. I wish you would reconsider.

Sarah from iatebrisbane.com said...

totally understandable. blogs take a fair bit of dedication for not a great amount of reward. this is absolutely one of my favourite blogs. honest, crude (in a good way) and not focused on all that cutesy crap. you focus on truthful food and i love your new focus on kitchen gardens.
I hope you find your Mojo. but if you don't we'll follow you on your next adventure. :)

I, too, think you are hilarious and love your writing and photographs. Been reading B&H for a couple of years - don't leave me! I need the escapism of wishing I lived a different life!!

Whatever dude, I love your tone. If people don't like it maybe they should, oh I don't know, maybe not read the blog? Anyway, I hope you do start something else because I will read the crap out of it. Best wishes!

I don't get what kind of personality finds it ok to criticize the tone of a blog they're not forced to read. Asshats. I'm with everyone else--I'll definitely be following the next thing you start on the Interwebs.

Kenon Thompson said...

I'm with everyone else! I'll follow what your new thing may be. And for those who may be "offended" by your tone. Let them be and continue doing what you do! Swearing and all I find your posts great reads!

Fuck, I just found your blog via Saveur not so long ago. Enjoy reading it, seeing life through your eyes...and, your attitude (what ever that means). Please do keep us up to date on the next project! In the meantime, I hope you get all the tomatoes your heart desires. Best wishes to you.

I will miss you, Alicia! I for one have always loved your tone. So refreshing, and yes, I do think you're hilarious. I also love what you eat. Will look forward to any future projects, so please do keep us posted.

Count me as one of the ones who thinks you are hilarious. It's what keeps me coming back to your blog. You do what you gotta do, though. Maybe I'm not so sad about the thought of this blog ending because I live in Portland, too. As if I think I'd ever have the chance of bumping into you someday and saying, "Hey, you're that hilarious food blogger!"

Helen Lehndorf said...

Nooooooo! You are my favourite food blog and I love your smart-ass stuff - you make me laugh hard out.

Ah well. Please put links to anything else you do on here and I'm still going to stalk you on flickr.

Sad to see you go, but interested to see what comes next. I know what you mean when you say a "dip in the ol' creativity." For what it's worth I enjoy(ed) your tone and appreciated your bluntness and honesty-- it was refreshing and pretty funny too.

Hey woman,
You can't just drop we, the devoted lurkers who depend upon your rare wit and inspiration when it comes to food! I am a Northern California native myself and I totally understand about the crappy weather in this area getting to folks! Being a single mom, I Also get the notion of flat being tired! I love your little garden, and your little family. Wanna hear something hilarious? I have my garden in pots, and tote it out to the sun every day, then pack it in at night so that the snails don't get it! My plants are rather pathetic from being dragged around so much, but there are 8 tomatoes and dozens of cuke blossoms, several bells, and dammit! I'M GONNA EAT EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM!!! NO SNAIL ALL YOU CAN EAT THIS YEAR.

Seriously, if you go somewhere else I will follow too! We Pacific Northwestern Artists (I'm one of those, too) gotta stick together!!!

Ah Alice!
I am crushed that you don't feel like posting anymore but get it.

Please do post when you feel like it or let us know where we can find you and your lovely pictures in the future! Like others, I loved your blogging 'voice' and tried many of your recipes.

Take care and don't worry about all the moans and groans you hear from your readers, it's only because they adored your blog!

Fuck'em if they don't get your tone ! I love your blog. You inspire me ! My lemon cucumbers are coming into their own soon. Stay with us in some form.

Fuck! Don't stop. I've never really commented myself but I must say: my girlfriends and I fucking adore your blog, your attitude, etc. We are trashy talking tattooed mamas as well, though we live in SF area. We've even started our own foodie/arty/kiddie blog INSPIRED BY YOU. It's damned refreshing to read someone who writes the way we talk. Please keep writing.

I also love your blog, I think that you are hilarious, and I could probably rival you for using fuck, even though I am 60.

I know it is a drag to keep up with a blog, just post when you are inspired, I will keep checking. I love your recipes, and what you have to say about food.

I especially like your hippie rants, as I really was a hippie in the 60's.

peace, man

Everyone else has said what I'd like to, but I gotta add my comment to list... because you just need to be appreciated sometimes, right? The internet is weird. You influenced my life... and you live in Oregon. Way to do what you want to do, and have the sense to leave something even if you're recognized for it.

good luck. maybe you could call your new blog 'fuck blogging' - but that just sounds like it could be gross.
whatever way you go -- good fucking luck
