how to get small children to hate you:

attempt to feed them quesadillas stuffed with quinoa, green chiles, and sauteed zucchini. (this earned a, "I don't like this food. I want to go home and eat MY food!" from my friend's daughter who was hanging out at my house for the day.)
How to get small children to love you:

Make people out of food. I served these with chips covered in melted cheese (which my son rejected in favor of plain chips- WHATEVER, KID.) and unbelievably, my son still only ate half his dinner and then begged for a snack immediately after. (which he does basically every night. WTF IS THAT CRAP? 3 year olds. psh.) A snack!? WE HAD SNACKS FOR DINNER, DUDE.
edited to add: by the way, the quinoa snacks were for lunch earlier in the week, and I DID make them eat them, hahaha! my son actually ate his fine, though he complained. he actually ate less of the refried-bean face than he did of the quinoa quesadilla! he didn't want to screw up the eyes and ears on his face. can you tell which face is which? i made bean versions of our family. :)

Those quesadillas sound awesome to me. but I am 31 years old. kids! you are an extremely awesome mom though to make the face-food plates for them & not make them stay at the table with their hippie-chow quesadillas! love it.
Um, if I come over to your house, I promise not to complain if you serve me quesadillas with quinoa and zucchini... haha
Great idea! I'm going to tell my cousin to try this... her little one's starting to refuse to eat and she's about to tear her hair out!
psh, kids indeed :) Those quesadillas look damn tasty to me.
A fantastic post. So cute! it's the same at our house I'm afraid. Our son likes pasta, pasta, pasta oh and raw veg. Of course he does not have to try other stuff since he KNOWS that he won't like it. :..( I'm one of these moms I never thought I'd be - I often cook seperatly for him. Will this ever change? Oh by the way we are not italians.

I might make my dinner into a face today! We are having meatballs with pasta.
I think your idea of dinner looks yum though!
beautiful pictures - love your blog :)
& hehe.... nice food arrangement
♥
First of all, quesadillas with quinoa, of course! Even literarily it just looks and sounds so great. Second of all, I love that this blog exists.
Maybe you should try calling dinner a snack? :P
Oh yes, I can see the resemblance.
hi xea! did you get my email?
Funny! I'll have to try this on my newly picky almost-3-year-old.
nacherluver, my friends eat far from crappy. when i was a kid, i always preferred the food at my own house because my friends' food always tasted weird. it's normal, it's not like her parents are shoveling junk food in her face all day and i offended her delicate sensibilities.
by the way, "People eat so crappy and look at our wholesome food like it's scary. I hate resorting to lesser foods for the sake of the company."
REALLY?! i hope your friends don't know that you have to take a WHOLE STEP DOWN IN QUALITY just to feed them dinner. :/
i love the quesadillas and i also love the edible face, great idea! i will try it with my nephew! cheers from london
No offense intended. I try to feed my kids whole foods & live in an area where kids eat mostly fast food and processed food. I was speaking from experience and was not meaning to sound harsh. I apologize. I was speaking sarcastically but forget the keyboard doesn't show inflection. I am far from perfect and my kids are far from fast food free. Deleted the comment. Will do the same with this one.
I forget sarcasm offends. Please forgive me? :(
Haha quinoa quesadilla sounds delicious and the snack faces are genius! When we were young my parents would say "If you don't like it, don't eat it, but don't say anything." We learnt to shut up and enjoy our food after a while :)

I also second L'homme presse- I'm glad this blog exists. You light up my days,
you are hilarious... and clever for the food faces.
okay those food faces rock! I may just have to make those at my house! So creative!
amy :)
In our house, my husband is the picky eater! His recent complaint was that my curry was too "flavorful". He protests that he has a "sensitive and bland pallate."
mrs. b, tell your husband to stop being such a pussy. :D
Your my new favorite smile for the day...love your site, you make me laugh!

I love zucchini quesadillas, they are great with corn and a little cilantro.
My sister will appreciate this post. My nephew can be finicky. Looks delish.
Grated zucchini sauteed with a little olive oil and basil, in a quesadilla with a little cheese, YUM!
I wish I had thought of the food faces when I had a daycare. I served hot lunches most days, and I got a lot of little kids to try foods they never ate at home.
ps, love, love, love your blog, and laughed out loud several times reading this post and some of your comments...
Funny....my kids just eat Halloween candy for dinner now! jk, kind of..:) Great idea, I love a bribe, a trick or a sneaky way to get a semi healthy nibble in their bodies!! I will do anything at this point...and the quesadil-lys look yumilishious!!-Chris Ann
Your bean faces are adorable and creative.
When I was a kid, it was just "eat this. Eat this now." Jeez.
adorable.
i love this. great idea!
(also, i'm in portland and a 27 yr old mama just learning to cook and wanting to learn more about preparing healthy foods. . . fyi (: my babe is only 5 months old now but toddlerdom will call for some cleverness like this. good work.)
The quesadillas look good to me! I'm having real trouble finding quinoa though. Is there anything that comes close to being a good substitute?
